A wonderfully authentic early English high-back tavern or farmhouse settle, with a strong presence. Remarkably, it remains in untouched condition and retains its original scumble paint, now beautifully mellowed and softly bleached by time.
Constructed from elm, it features a thick single-plank seat and a gentle, rather than severe, curvature, making it comfortable to place in a kitchen, hall, or living room. Traditionally, settles of this form were positioned near the hearth: the high back and floor-level sides were designed to trap warmth and shield the sitter from drafts, creating a cosy refuge by the fire.
