A wide two-door armoire or marriage cupboard, inscribed “MRD” and dated 1835, just at the end of the Neo-Classical period, when blues and soft pastel tones were highly fashionable. These colours feel very current today and give the piece a fresh, modern appeal.
The doors each feature two framed panels with charming folk-painted motifs of classical urns and flowering plants, while the sides are also decorated with floral designs. The lock and key are both present and in working order, and the left door retains its two original bolts. Inside are two lower drawers for keepsakes and a hanging rail. We have tested it with modern hangers: it is suitable for hanging clothing, though garments with wider shoulders may need to sit at a slight angle.
Likely German, though the style is characteristic of Central Europe more broadly, including Switzerland, Austria, and Alsace. A very solid and clean example of regional craftsmanship.
