Antique Folk Art Pine Marriage Cupboard with Cavalrymen

A charming antique pine marriage cupboard with particularly unusual painted decoration, dating from around 1840. The upper panels depict mounted military riders or cavalrymen, while the lower panels are decorated with classical urns overflowing with flowers. Running along the top is finely executed blue and white faux-marble painting, adding another attractive decorative detail.

The cavalryman was a popular and romantic image during the 19th century, taking his place alongside more familiar neo-classical motifs. It is, however, infrequently encountered on painted furniture of this kind, where religious and traditional folk imagery is much more commonly found. This unusual subject matter makes the cupboard a particularly interesting and desirable find.

In very good condition, with pleasing proportions that are not too large, the cupboard also retains its clean and original compartmented interior. A wonderfully decorative and characterful piece with an unusual story to tell.
