A charming 19th-century pine and hardwood box settle with two lifting lids that reveal a spacious storage area. This piece is attractively decorative, featuring hand-turned spindles with traces of the original paint. The backrest rises to a stylized tulip form in the centre, a motif common in Hungarian folk art, and includes a mirror—an unusual feature likely intended to deter the evil eye, suggesting it was probably made for a marriage. It is very solid, finished in a cream off-white and wax, with a clean interior.
Central Europe, circa 1880.
